This compilation of previously recorded tracks by El McMeen honors the ladies. (Mastering of compilation: Marc Moss, Targetstudios.com) They are the subject matter of all the pieces of music, starting with El’s original “Song for Sheila,” for his wife (pictured in the cover art, photographed in Huntingdon, PA).

Following is the Irish folk tune “My Mary of the Curling Hair,” by which El honors his daughter Mary.

The iconic Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738) is credited with a number of the tunes: Blind Mary, Bridget Cruise, the 3rd and 4th Airs, Eleanor Plunkett, and Fanny Power.

“Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella” is a French Christmas carol.

“Fairflower of Northumberland” honors a lady of that region in England who was badly treated by a Scot (hopefully not a distant relative of El’s), but remained a fair flower to her friends and neighbors even after her relationship debacle.

“Give Me Your Hand” is a gorgeous tune by Ruaidri Dáll Ó Catháin (c.1570-c.1650).

“Maggie’s” full name is “When You and I Were Young, Maggie,” by George W. Johnson and James Austin Butterfield.

“Niel Gow’s Lament for the Death of His Second Wife” is poignant and beautiful. Niel Gow, the great Scottish fiddler, lived from 1727 to 1807.

“Pretty Maid Milking a Cow” is a ballad from the 18th Century.

“Star of the County Down” is a very old Irish melody, with lyrics for a later song setting by Cathal MacGarvey (1866 – 1927).

“Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go” (aka "Wild Mountain Thyme”) is a Scottish folk song.
